Education

At present, the district has a rather high number of education facilities: 17 schools, 2 kindergarten schools, 10 kindergartens, 6 houses of culture, 14 clubs, and 21 libraries. As it can be seen from Figure 1, the number of education institutions has radically decreased as compared to 1986.

Figure 1. The number of education institutions in the Slavgorod District as compared to 1986-2001.

There are 2 kindergarten-schools, 6 secondary schools, 9 basic schools and 1 primary kindergarten school in the Slavgorod District. Totally for the district, there are 321 teachers for 2,741 schoolchildren. Teacher's staff is not complete in all schools: the required personnel should be 368 persons, i.e. 47 more persons are needed.

Currently, there are 41 institutions of culture in the district (houses of culture, clubs and libraries). However, as compared to 1986 their number went down 1.36 times (Figure 12).

Ecological education and training should be organised in secondary schools, kindergartens, and sports and rehabilitation centres. This can be done through close collaboration of experts of different level with local authorities, education and economy professionals and the local population.

Ecological education will help increase the general ecological awareness among the population, allowing people living in the contaminated areas to develop safe living practices, make adaptations to adverse environmental impact and improve conditions of life and work. Population of the affected areas will build interest in and demand for radiation ecology information and will form a new and better level of ecological thinking and culture.
